Hey there! I'm Kim, and I'm excited to share a little bit about myself.
I love every aspect of reading. I love reading books (especially in the summer by the pool). I love working with struggling readers and watching them grow at their own pace. I love raising readers. I also love to read about the field of literacy. I spend some of my free time listening to podcasts and reading blogs and professional articles about literacy, and through my site, I look forward to sharing my favorite things with you. My hope is to support you regardless of whether you are a parent working with a reader at home, a classroom teacher needing help with lessons and ideas, or a reading specialist too.
Kim in the Classroom
I changed careers at 35. I had always wanted to teach, and when I reached my 30th birthday, I realized I had to give it a try. So I went back to school to obtain my masters’ degrees in literacy and childhood education while working full-time. The month of May 2008 was a busy one for me. The first weekend, I finished my student teaching. The second weekend, I graduated from grad school. The third weekend, my hubby and I welcomed my first baby.
During that time period in the field of teaching, it was really hard to get a teaching position so with a 4 month old at home. I started working as a Teaching Assistant in AIS (Academic Intervention Services). I worked with students who struggled in both reading and math. I did this for 4 long years with a very poor salary until I finally landed the job of my dreams-Reading Specialist.
Many, many years and lots of learning later, I have learned so much about how to help struggling readers as well as raised my children to be strong readers.
