Parents always want the best for their child. Many parents want their child to have a better life than they have had. Many parents want their child to be more successful in school than they were. They don’t want their child to struggle like they did. What is the secret to a child being a successful student you ask? The ability to read and being a strong reader!
The Importance of Being A Fluent Reader
Reading is a fundamental skill for academic success. Strong reading skills allow students to access information, understand complex concepts, and express themselves effectively. Studies have consistently shown that students who are good readers are more likely to succeed in school and beyond.
Here are some of the reasons why reading is so important for student success:
- Reading is the foundation for all other learning. In order to learn any subject, students need to be able to read and understand the material. This is true for all subjects, from math and science to social studies and language arts.

The Personal Benefits of Being A Reader
In addition to these academic benefits, reading also has many personal benefits.
Reading can help students relax and de-stress, it can spark their imaginations. it can even help them develop a lifelong love of learning. Reading an actual book is not using an electronic device. It is good for children to not be “plugged in” for more than two hours a day. It gives their brains a break from the fast pace and the blue light of an electronic device.
So Why Do you Have to Read for 20 minutes Nightly With Your Child?
- Parents are their child’s first teacher. They learn first from their parents. If your child sees how important reading is to you, then they will become more curious about it.
- Reading with your child is a great time for bonding and a great time for cuddling with your child before they get too big and don’t want to anymore. (I speak from experience here.)
- Reading at night with your child helps them go to sleep!
- When children see their parents reading, they will be more likely to do it too. You are helping your child become lifelong readers.
